The apostle Paul, in Ephesians 6:17, tells us the Sword of the Spirit is the WORD OF GOD.
The is a reference to the the Written Word of God--the Bible.
Isaiah tells us that if a person speaks anything in the name of the Lord and it cannot
be backed up by what has already been WRITTEN. Then there is NO LIGHT in them (Isaiah 8).
When Satan came to tempt Jesus, in an all out effort to thwart God's plan to redeem us, Jesus iterated
and reiterated the phrase, "It is Written!"
If we are going to take up the sword of the spirit against very powerful, very dangerous, spiritual
enemies, we had better understand that sword is the WRITTEN word of God.
The Sword of the spirit is the Written Word of God. No more, no less. And the Written
Word of God becomes a very powerful weapon in the mouth and prayers of any Christian who is a doer of the Word and not a hearer
only.
Jesus could have said anything he wanted to when he was being tempted by the devil. Anything he
said would have been the Word of God--as he was, and is, God. Everything that comes out of his mouth is a two-edged
sword.
But he was very careful to leave us with a powerful example of exactly how to wage spiritual warfare.
Jesus left us with three words we would do well never to forget:
IT... IS... WRITTEN!
